Do not love the World

1 John 2:15-17

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to let the things around us quietly pull our attention away from God?

In 1 John 2:15–17, the Apostle John gives us a straightforward reality check: don't love the world or anything in it. He makes it clear that we can’t have it both ways. We can't hold hands with the world while trying to walk closely with God—we have to make a choice. Loving the world pulls us toward chasing after physical cravings, obsessing over what looks good to the eye, and puffing ourselves up with pride. Loving God, on the other hand, means laying down our own plans, trusting His will, and walking in obedience to His Word.

It’s easy to read that and think, "That won't happen to me," but Scripture gives us an honest look at someone who got caught in that exact trap: a man named Demas.

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Paul writes a heartbreaking line: "For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica." Demas wasn’t just a casual bystander; he was right there in the trenches doing ministry alongside Paul. Yet, over time, the pull of the culture, comfort, and the world’s rewards proved too strong. He packed up, walked away, and abandoned the mission.

That’s the subtle danger of letting our hearts drift toward worldly things—it rarely happens all at once, but it slowly pulls us away from where we are called to be. That is why John’s warning matters so much today: what the world offers is fleeting, but staying rooted in God’s love is the only thing that actually lasts.
